Avid world traveler Madisson Ledan explains why every traveler should visit Haiti in their lifetime.

Haiti is an off-the-beaten-path travel destination, but those who have been, are insisting other travelers visit this piece of Caribbean paradise. Madisson Ledan is one of those people. He’s an avid traveler who has visited Haiti multiple times, and he recently explained just what makes this country such a special travel destination.

“Travelers flock to the Dominican Republic, Turks and Caicos, and other Caribbean destinations,” Madisson Ledan says. “But a lot of them are skipping right over Haiti, deeming it an unnecessary stop. That couldn’t be farther from the truth.”

Madisson Ledan explains that Haiti is a destination rich in history and culture. It was the first black republic in the world to claim independence. This country, which claimed its freedom in 1804, shows its patriotism is many ways. Gorgeous monuments and buildings were erected to celebrate this freedom, and they’re still standing for visitors to view today. Many of them have miraculously survived earthquakes and other disasters.

The country is flourishing with culture too, Madisson Ledan describes, and this culture is remarkably different from surrounding countries. Madisson Ledan states that seeing the dances, listening to music, and viewing the religious traditions are part of what makes a visit to Haiti so memorable. The culture is drawn from Haiti’s native Taino, Spanish, French, and African influences, making it a melting pot of food, religion, architecture, and more.

“The food is reason to visit Haiti alone,” Madisson Ledan says. “The varying cultural influences mean you can taste cuisines from around the world in this single, small country. Fresh crab, local fish, okra, a rainbow of fruits — you can eat them all here.”

Madisson Ledan describes that the scenery is something visitors will never forget. Haiti is located on the Caribbean Sea, with turquoise water, white sand beaches, and gorgeous tree-covered mountains. The vistas are postcard-worthy and are much of what draws visitors back time and time again.

“The small villages, farmland, and countryside are just as magical as the Caribbean shores everyone sees in photographs,” Madisson Ledan says. “It’s these areas where you fall in love with the land, the feeling of traveling back in time, and the wonderful people who call Haiti home.”

Another reason to visit Haiti is to give the economy a much-needed boost. It is a country that has been nearly destroyed by numerous earthquakes and the resulting tragedies. Madisson Ledan says that visiting Haiti means you’ll have a direct positive impact on the people who live there. He feels it should be a mission for travelers to help this country and its people get back on their feet in 2020.
